For Richard, life is rarely quiet: between sharing his home (and one of his homemade Bakewell tarts) with Katie the parrot and tackling long-distance cycling challenges for fun (yes, he once rode from London to Amsterdam in 36 hours), there’s always something going on.
He grew up in Leicester and originally trained as a scientist, studying biology, before realising the lab coat life wasn’t quite for him. Then a decision to take a photography GCSE propelled him down his path toward filmmaking, which he followed on with a master’s in science communication which lead him into factual filmmaking.
Rich always leaned into the unconventional: early in his TV life, he travelled solo to Antarctica to shoot a Teachers’ TV series, operating both camera and sound in sub-zero conditions. That same sense of adventure, independence and quiet determination still fuels the work he does today.
